Art therapy uses the process of creation as a reflection of an individual’s development, interests, concerns, and conflicts. It can help create self-awareness, develop social skills, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem. In a community setting, positioning the focus on the process in lieu of the product allows every person to participate, no matter their level of artistic ability. In a clinical setting, medical and health care providers often use creative processes to gain valuable insight into their patient’s progress toward healing. Art therapy may help clients cope with their illness or disability and express their deep feelings.

Event sponsors include: Transformation Partner - Dr. Todd Wilkinson, Bloomfield, Mich.

We invite you to join us at this fun-filled event, which will include a strolling dinner, silent auction, awards ceremony and an explosive show of magic and illusion involving audience participation, music and dance. We will also be raffling a 6-day package for two to the Ryder Cup Golf Tournament.

Honorees include: Richard Astrein – Astrein’s Creative Jewelers; Maxine and Stuart Frankel – Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation; Honorable Edward Sosnick - Oakland County Circuit Court; Kay White – Community Volunteer; Troy Athens High School and Walled Lake Central High School.

Youth Transitional Living Shelter Receives $50,000 donation from Anonymous Benefactor
Bloomfield Hills, MI-October 17, 2003-Christine Weinreich, an attorney with the law firm Ferrick & Weinreich, PLLC in Troy delivered a check Tuesday to Common Ground Sanctuary for $50,000 from one of her clients, who chooses to remain anonymous.
The anonymous donor, moved by the agency's loss of $200,000 funding for their A Step Forward program, challenged the agency to raise $150,000 to help cover the loss with the promise to donate up to $50,000 to cover the rest. The agency raised $152,633 from community organizations, schools and foundations, so the donor kept their promise by having a check hand-delivered this week.

January 13, 2003

Dear friends,

You may have seen reports about Common Ground Sanctuary’s A Step Forward Program funding crisis in the media lately. It is true that one of our transitional living programs for homeless youth is in jeopardy due to loss of federal funding.

We are committed to keeping that program open until December 2003 while we appeal the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s decision and apply again for funding next year.

Rest assured that the agency as a whole is in no danger of closing. No other programs will be affected by the loss of this grant. We will continue to provide the same quality crisis intervention services we have for the past 30 years.

Please read the press release below for more complete information on this situation.

Thank you for your support.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Denies $1 Million Grant To Local Homeless Youth Program

Bloomfield Hills-January 7, 2003- Common Ground Sanctuary's "A Step Forward" Transitional Living Program for Homeless Youth received word today that they were denied a 5-year grant from the Department of Health and Human Services worth $200,000 annually ($1 million total) to support the program. This grant has provided half of the budget needed to run the program since 1987. The program has been in existence since 1985.

It costs the agency approximately $1000 per day to run the program. This includes, medical assistance, shelter, food, clothing, job training and educational assistance. Without these funds the facility may eventually have to close. "You can't just throw away people," said Tony Rothschild, Common Ground Sanctuary CEO and President, "The agency is committed to finding the funds necessary to keep this program open for another year. We will apply for the grant again in May". If the agency doesn't receive the grant next year it will most likely be forced to close. The agency is currently exploring the possibility of any recourse with the Department of Health and Human Services.

The program serves a specific need in southeastern Michigan as the only co-ed transitional living program in the area. Common Ground Sanctuary's program is the only one in Oakland County that houses males ages 16-20.

The agency as a whole is in no danger of closing. No other programs will be affected by the loss of this grant. We will continue to provide the same quality crisis intervention services we have for the past 30 years.

Helping people in need for more than 30 years, Common Ground Sanctuary's mission is to provide services to youths, adults and families in crisis. Common Ground Sanctuary Homeless Youth Shelter In Funding Crisis

Fact Sheet
January 2, 2003

Who: Common Ground Sanctuary's "A Step Forward" Program. The 17-year old transitional living program for homeless youth 16-20 currently at full capacity with seven residents.

It costs the agency $1000 per day to run the program. This includes, medical assistance, shelter, food, clothing, job training and educational assistance for homeless youth. The goal of a stay at the shelter is self-sufficiency.

What: The program was wait-listed for the $200,000 annual Health and Human Services grant they have received since 1987.

When: The agency applied for the grant in May 2002. As of January 2, 2003-4 months into the 2003/2003 funding cycle they have not been notified whether or not they will receive the much-needed funding they have received for the past 15 years. The funding makes up approximately half of the program's annual budget.

Where: The "At Step Forward" program is located at 1222 S. Washington in Royal Oak.

The result: This move could leave seven youth ages 16-20 with nowhere to go. Several are male. Males have a particularly hard time finding transitional living programs in Southeast Michigan. The A Step Forward Program is the only transitional living program in Oakland County that accepts males ages 16-20.
